Memorial at Deitch

Dash Snow (1981-2009) A Community Memorial, July 23 - August 15, 2009 at Deitch Gallery NY

Dash Snow's friends and family have joined together to create an open memorial exhibition for Dash's community. They have asked friends to bring photographs and video of Dash and works of art made for Dash and works made in his memory. Friends have also brought in special works by Dash from their own collections. A group of previously unseen Polaroids from Dash's studio are also included. The memorial project also has an open wall where Dash's friends and admirers can write, paint or paste artworks and texts in his memory. The façade of the gallery has been painted over with a giant fire extinguisher version of Dash's tag, SACER.

Visitors are encouraged to bring flowers to throw into the main gallery where images of Dash and his own works are exhibited. Dash's community of friends is invited to bring in additional images and works during the run of the show. Photo by Kazumi Asamura

Street Art ♥

Masters from the 1970s NYC graf movement (Blade, Crash, Daze, Jonone, Quik, Lee Quinones, Rammellzee, Sharp) and European art stars (Victor Ash, Banksy, Blek le Rat, Ikon, Sozyone, Plateus) are among 19 painters, sculptors and photographers showing contemporary works in “WHOLE IN THE WALL: 1970 – NOW”. It’s an unprecedented, museum-quality, 150-piece exploration of street art’s ongoing transition to, yes, fine art. The pieces are all original and rare; most are new; many were finished onsite in the past few weeks. Helenbeck Gallery - May 29 - June 27, 529-535 West 35th Street.

♥ I.E.D.

BAGHDAD — It goes like this: Boy meets girl. They exchange glances and text messages, the limit of respectable courting here. Then boy asks girl’s father for her hand. Dad turns him down. Boy goes to girl’s house and plants a bomb out front. The authorities call it a “love I.E.D.,” or improvised explosive device, and it is not just an isolated case. Capt. Nabil Abdul Hussein of the Iraqi national police said that six had exploded in the Dora neighborhood of Baghdad alone in the past year...

Lazer Boom ♥

Your favorite two-fingered mandude Diplo made a ridiculously ill sneak peek mixtape at the new Major Lazer record he and Switch have been cooking up in their alien Caribbean kitchen—it's basically snippets in the mix of the entire album, which is awesome and features everyone from Vybz Kartel to Santigold to Ricky Blaze to Nina Sky, plus that ridiculous Black Flag sample, and the T-Pain autotune baby. Basically when we are kneeling by our bed praying to Jah, this album is what we are asking for. Can we die now? Cool except we don't want to cause then we couldn't listen to this record every single day. That sounded corny but we are not shy about our love... tell the world!

Would you Slap Your Father ? If So, You’re a Liberal. (How to keep an open mind by Nicholas D. Kristof of The New York Times) “Minds are very hard things to open, and the best way to open the mind is through the heart,” Professor Haidt says. “Our minds were not designed by evolution to discover the truth; they were designed to play social games.”... Enschede, the Netherlands — In this small town just across the border from Germany, a small group of Dutch scientists and one irrepressible Austrian salesman have dedicated themselves to the task of reinventing one of the great inventions of the 20th century — Polaroid’s instant film.
